Why I Decided to Try Digital Products
Starting my journey with digital products felt exciting and full of potential. Everywhere I looked on TikTok, creators were talking about passive income, digital downloads, and how easy it was to make money online. Like many others, I decided to give it a shot and see if selling digital products was really as good as everyone claimed.
Setting Up My Shopify Store
I began by creating a Shopify store, and overall my experience with Shopify itself was very positive. The platform is easy to manage, has great navigation, and makes setting up an online store feel simple even for beginners. I connected my store to Pinterest and focused my advertising efforts there, since Pinterest is often recommended for digital product marketing.
Creating My First Digital Product
My first product was my own ebook. I spent time creating it and felt proud to finally launch something original. Unfortunately, I did not get a single sale. That was my first reality check. Maybe writing ebooks was not one of my strongest talents, or maybe my product did not stand out enough in a crowded digital product market.
Switching to Planners With Resell Rights
After seeing no results, I decided to change my approach. Instead of creating my own digital product from scratch, I bought planners with resell rights. These included meditation planners, daily affirmation schedules, and budget planners. The idea was that these types of digital products were already proven to sell, so it might be easier to gain traction.
Using Pinterest Organic Content and Paid Ads
For the first month, I focused on organic Pinterest content while keeping my Shopify store active, but I did not see a single sale. After that, I decided to run paid Pinterest ads while continuing to post organically. One thing I noticed right away was that my ads were getting a lot of views, but very few outbound clicks. The pins were being seen, but people were not clicking through to my store. This made me realize that maybe my pins were not strong enough, or my sales funnel was not set up correctly. Over the next two months, I managed to get two sales, totaling eight dollars in revenue, after spending around one hundred dollars on ads.
My Honest Thoughts on Digital Products
This experience taught me a lot about selling digital products. I do believe it is definitely possible to make money with digital products, but I also think the space is very saturated. If you browse Etsy, you will see hundreds of variations of the same planners, ebooks, and templates. Standing out takes more than just listing a product and hoping for sales.
Why I Decided to Move On
Looking back, maybe my strategy was not strong enough, or maybe I did not put in enough time. Either way, for me, selling digital products was a no go. I decided to stop selling digital products and try something different. While this did not work out the way I hoped, it was still a valuable learning experience and helped me understand what business paths are not right for me.
